5 Questions You Should Ask Your DJ Before Booking (Don’t Skip These!)

Booking your wedding DJ isn’t just about finding someone who can hit play on your Spotify faves — it’s about finding someone who knows how to read the room, keep the energy flowing, and help make your celebration unforgettable.

Before you lock it in, make sure you’re asking the right questions. Here are five things every couple should ask a potential DJ before saying “yes” (to the entertainment, not just each other):

🎧 What’s your experience with weddings like ours?

You want a DJ who gets your type of party. Whether it’s a cultural fusion wedding, a non-traditional backyard celebration, or a black-tie ballroom bash, your DJ should have experience with similar vibes. The more they’ve done that matches your vision, the smoother things will go.

🎤 Do you also MC, or just play music?

Not all DJs are comfortable on the mic, but a great wedding DJ should be able to hype up the crowd and guide your guests through the evening. From introductions and announcements to hyping up the dance floor, make sure your DJ has MC skills if you want that flow.

📝 What does your setup include, and what add-ons are available?

You’d be surprised how much this varies. Do they bring microphones for toasts? Dance floor lighting? A photo booth? Uplights for the venue? Knowing what’s included (and what costs extra) can help you budget better and upgrade if you want that extra wow factor.

🎶 Can we customize our playlist — and do you take guest requests?

This one’s big. Some DJs love collaborating on playlists. Others prefer full creative control. Neither is wrong, but you’ll want to know where your DJ stands. Ask how they handle must-play songs, do-not-plays, and what they do when guests start requesting line dances you swore you didn’t want.
