Do-Not-Play List: Why Every Couple Needs One
Do-Not-Play List: Why Every Couple Needs One
When you're planning the soundtrack to the biggest celebration of your life, it’s easy to focus on the songs you do want to hear — your first dance, your ceremony walk, the song that kicks off the dance floor. But there’s one list that’s just as important (and often overlooked): the Do-Not-Play List.
Whether it’s a cringey throwback, an overplayed line dance, or a song that brings up bad memories — this list helps your DJ avoid the vibe killers so you can stay in your zone and enjoy every moment.
Here’s why every couple needs a Do-Not-Play List (and how to make one that works for you):
Protect the Vibe You’re Creating
You’ve spent time choosing your décor, outfits, lighting, and music style to create a certain energy for your day. One wrong song can shift the mood and throw it off completely — especially if it doesn’t reflect your taste or crowd.
Your Do-Not-Play List is your safety net. It keeps the energy aligned with what you want, whether that’s classy and romantic, hyped and clubby, or a mix of both.
Avoid Songs That Feel Overdone or Inauthentic
If hearing the Macarena or Chicken Dance makes you roll your eyes — you’re not alone. A lot of couples feel the same way about certain “wedding classics.” And that’s totally valid.
If you’re tired of songs that show up at every wedding and just don’t match your vibe, put them on the list. Your DJ will pivot to other high-energy tracks that still get your guests moving without the cheese.
Handle Sensitive Songs with Care
Music can be deeply emotional. There may be songs that bring up personal or family history that you’d rather not revisit on your big day. Sharing that with your DJ ahead of time means they’ll make sure those songs never make it into the rotation — even if a guest requests them.
Prevent Guest Requests from Taking Over
Some guests love putting in song requests — and while that can be fun, it can also lead to songs that don’t fit the flow or feel of your reception. Your Do-Not-Play List sets clear boundaries and gives your DJ the ability to kindly decline anything that doesn’t match your vision.
You Can Be Specific OR Broad — Just Be Honest
Your list can be as simple as:
No profanity
No country
No slow songs after 9 PM
No songs by [specific artist]
No songs with certain lyrics/themes
Or you can list titles like:
“Blurred Lines” – Robin Thicke
“Celebration” – Kool & the Gang
“Single Ladies” – Beyoncé (trust me, not every bride wants that moment)
Just let your DJ know what you don’t want — we’ll do the rest.
It Helps Your DJ Get to Know You Better
The Do-Not-Play List is just as valuable as your must-play list. It tells your DJ about your style, your boundaries, and what kind of experience you want to create for yourselves and your guests.
A great DJ doesn’t just play songs — we curate a vibe. Knowing what not to play helps us serve you better.
